Booking was easy, however it was not made clear that there was a distinct 1st class/2nd class system in place and 2nd class didn’t even guarantee a seat on an overcrowded deck with no shade.

Like on all public transport operators in Switzerland there is a class distinction 1st and 2nd. On our boats like on trains there are no guaranteed seats. If you want to make sure you have enough seating space it is recommended to book 1st class.
