Piazza del Duomo , Piazza del Duomo, 53100 Siena SI, Italy

The tour ends inside the Duomo cathedral

Meet up with your local guide in central Siena. See the Basilica of San Domenico, the gorgeous Gothic church made of red brick, before setting off with your guide walking the narrow cobblestoned lanes, learning about the various 'contrade,' or neighborhoods, all of which have a distinct personality and character.

Then head over to Piazza del Campo, the seashell-shaped space that has been the public living room of locals for centuries. Admire the Fonte Gaia, Fountain of the World, built in 1419; look up at the tall campanile, attached to the 14th-century Palazzo Pubblico.

After some time, move on from the square and head to the Siena Duomo, one of the most awe-inspiring cathedrals in Europe. Take in the black-and-white-striped facade and then breeze right inside thanks to your skip-the-line ticket. Inside, let your guide lead you around, revealing priceless works of art by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. Take in the Gothic interior of the cathedral, along with Renaissance-era busts of pope and emperors.

When the tour is over, feel connected to Siena like never before.

Great Introduction to Siena

I am glad we booked this for our first day in Siena because our guide Alena (?) did a wonderful job introducing us to the city. We learned a lot about the city's role along the pilgrimage route, the competition among the neighborhoods (contrada), the horse race (Paleo), and Siena's relationship with Florence. Only about a quarter of the time was spent inside the duomo, so don't take this tour if that is all you are looking for. However, she left us in the duomo, so we were free to spend more time there afterward. Alena is an excellent tour guide and a joy to spend time with.

The walk through the city was very interesting. We liked the small size of the group. Nice to skip the line and get right into the cathedral.

The Tour guide is wonderful. She is very informed. Also, she is thoughtful about the Covid situation so suggested masks at appropriate times.

The tour was canceled the day before we were supposed to go because they said not enough people signed up. We only had one day in Siena. I asked for other options and didn’t get any.

Good if you like tours or want skip-the-line tickets to cathedral

We don’t normally go on guided tours, but we missed the opportunity to buy the skip-the-line tickets for the Sienna cathedral. This tour included the desired tickets and was reasonable priced so we booked it. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Everyone in our group seemed to enjoy the tour. My elderly mom could hear the guide but struggles with understanding accents so it was hard for her to grasp what the guide was saying. If you enjoy guided tours, this was good.

Eleanor was excellent - warm, friendly and most welcoming. The tour was brilliant - a great mix of history and local culture. Everything was well explained- we learned loads about the city and were blown away by the stories of the Palio and then the inside of the Duomo . A great overall tour - cdo it tomorrow!

Excellent Walking Tour
Terence_M
, Sep 2019
The walking tour was excellent. A gentle stroll through the beautiful streets of Siena. Claudia, the tour guide, was both knowledgeable and engaging. Claudia also stayed beyond the allocated time in the Duomo in order to further explain some of its hidden treasures. Also for what the tour covered, the price was very reasonable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Siena.

WELL WORTH THE TOUR
drjmartinez1
, Sep 2019
Our guide, Claudia, was personable, knowledgable, witty, and energetic. She was proud of her hometown. She provided the historical significance of the Basilica of San Domenico, Santa Cateriniana, Piazza di Campo, and the Duomo. She shared, with enthusiasm, detailed information about the Palio and the friendly rivalry among the 17 church neighborhoods as well as the world's oldest Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Very much worth the tour; Grazie Claudia!
