Piazza del Popolo , Piazza del Popolo, Roma RM, Italy

At the center of Piazza del Popolo, by the large fountain with the lions and the obelisk. The nearest metro stop is Flaminio (Line A). Our City Wonders coordinators will be wearing blue City Wonders polo shirts or jackets to be easily recognizable at the meeting point.

This activity will end right where it started.
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. During your self-guided tour, learn about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from mid-November to March. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.

City Wonders
Location
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places on your self-guided tour. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii and head for a leisurely self-led tour around the city which paints a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.
Duration: 2 hours
Admission Ticket Included
  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION REQUIRED FROM ALL PASSENGERS: You MUST provide all passenger names at the time of booking in order to visit Mount Vesuvius or you may be refused entry.
  • During summer months in rare cases of inclement weather or strikes, the crater of Vesuvius may be closed to visitors. In this case, an alternative visit to the city of Naples will be included.
  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Near public transportation
  • Not recommended for travelers with back problems
  • No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
  • From late November to March the Vesuvius isn't accessible and it is replaced with a visit to the city of Naples with panoramic bus tour and free time.
  • Option to upgrade to Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Small-Group Day Trip from Rome with private coach (Mt Vesuvius or Naples not included)
  • *Upgrade Option ONLY: From November 1st until end of March, instead of Positano we will visit the town of Amalfi, as in Positano during the winter months most shops and restaurant are closed.
  • *Upgrade Option ONLY: Due to peak summer weekend traffic enroute and on the Amalfi Coast itself, between June 1st and September 11th, we may substitute Sorrento instead of Positano to avoid serious delays and provide you with a better experience.
  • The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius requires a good level of general fitness. The walk is uphill at a 14 degree angle and takes roughly 20 minutes.
  • Travelers should have a strong physical fitness level
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 24 travelers

We especially enjoyed traveling with Emiliano and the driver, Antonio. Emiliano is knowledgeable and lively and funny and kept us entertained while on the bus ride.

Great trip to Positano and Pompeii. Only downside is that it's so far from Rome you spend a lot of time on the bus.

Lunch in Positano was amazing, but we didn't have much time to look around. Local guide in Pompeii was excellent - very knowledgeable and very funny.

What a disappointment

This would have been a better trip if only our guide was more knowledgeable and fit. She was trying to catch her breath the whole time and her accent was very thick we were unable to understand what she was saying. We ended up going on our own and lost interests. She basically repeated herself a lot. We were also hoping to see more plasters of people found in the site. They showed us only one! The rests were in another museum that we did not come to visit. What a disappointment.

The tours were very good but there was no time for buying souvenirs. You felt rushed the entire time to make the 13 hour trip which is mostly bus rides. The guides were very nice.

Amalfi was awesome, wish the stay would have been longer though. The 2 hours ran so quickly. Pompeii was interesting.

Rainy day tour

We went on a wet day which did hamper the experience somewhat. We got to the top of Vesuvius but couldn't see anything due to fog. Pompeii was great, our guide Willie was very funny. We would have liked more time to explore on our own. Good weather is essential to get the most out of this tour.

One day on the road
Badger_G
, May 2022
If you don’t have a lot of time, it’s a great way to fit a lot into a single day. The guide at Pompeii was nice even though we had a timeline to keep, and free time in Positano was just enough to look around and grab pictures, shop, and relax on the beach with some drinks. It’s a lot of driving but I appreciated the effort the guide put in to make this all happen in one day.

Had a few issues

Barbara the guide from rome was a great. Very informative and easy to listen to. Stopped near monte cassino and has the most amazing croissants (stop doesn't look like much but is awesome) 5 stars for Barbara. Onto pompeii.....had 2 hours to go around the site which is no way near enough, the guide which was someone different was OK but was walking around 2 quick which didn't allow much time for a group of 15 to see/take pictures of things. Especially when one of the party had to use a crutch (mobility ok just needed extra support) I don't feel the guide took this into consideration when moving from area to area. The trip up the volcano is exactly what is says, it's a volcano. which was a fantastic experience. If I had the chance to go again, I'd get the train from rome to naples (very easy) and stay overnight. Would give u plenty time to experience pompeii on your own. If your pushed for time this trip would be ideal, if u have an extra day or 2....stay overnight in naples

We (myself and my wife) went on fully guided Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius day trip on 5th May 2022. Our tour guide was Marta. Regrettably some aspects of the trip were very disappointing. The guide did not appear to be ready with tickets at both sites of Mount Vesuvius as well as at Pompeii. This appeared to be a problem with only our group, especially at Pompeii where we waited close to a hour with no explanation offered. The local guides were also very frustrated and mentioned they have never seen anything like this before. Hence after discussion with Marta and local guides, it was decided the everybody buys their ticket so the tour can commence. Everyone queued up and some of us had bought the tickets when Marta managed to upload the tickets. We bought two tickets of total value of 32 Euros. The ticket office refused to refund the tickets as they didn’t think it was their fault. Initially Marta was rude and dismissive when we enquired about the refund. While we understand she was nervous and anxious, this was very unprofessional. As your customer we would like you to at least refund us for 32 Euros. We hope to get a prompt response from you regarding this. Thanks

Good if you have time
Robert_R
, May 2022
The tour was good but a lot of time on the bus (5 hours). You have about 2.5 hours in Pompeii and 1 hour at mount Vesuvius. If you have a lot of time in Rome it's good but there are a lot more sites (in rome) to see if you are short on time. The hadrians Villa tour was a 10 out of 10 for both time and experience.

Great Day!

Had a great day. It was well organised and the guides were very knowledgeable. The Mount Vesuvius trek is well worth the effort but it isn't for the faint hearted! Wear good walking shoes or trainers!! All in all, a very long but enjoyable day.

Not a small group
Matthew_R
, May 2022
This is not a small group tour. It’s a full coach bus with ~50 people. They only split you into 2 groups for the 1.5 hours you spend in Pompeii. Our guide Angela was great and Pompeii is absolutely worth going to. However if you’re looking for a smaller group to travel with this might not be for you.

Worth It!

Joselyn was amazing and very funny. It was a very long day but worth it. Just wish we could have spent a little more time at Pompeii.
