Your tour begins in central Florence, where you hop aboard your coach with your guide and head into the region of Umbria. Stop first in the beautiful town of Assisi, made famous by its ties to St. Francis. Now known as Italy's patron saint, Francis left the wealth of his family behind in the 13th century to preach on Assisi’s streets.

Follow your guide by foot to the Basilica of San Francesco, which hosts Giotto’s famous frescoes depicting St. Francis’ life. Continue on to the Convent of Santa Chiara, dedicated to St. Clare, one of Francis’ first followers in Assisi.

Hop aboard your coach and drive to the outskirts of town to see Santa Maria degli Angeli, a 9th-century church where it’s said St. Francis came to worship. Explore the interior with your guide before making your way back to your coach.

Head next to Cortona, the charming setting for the popular film and memoir, 'Under the Tuscan Sun.' Take some time to purchase lunch or explore the Palazzo Comunale and Santa Margherita Sanctuary, built in honor of Cortona’s patron saint.

After reuniting with your guide, travel back to central Florence to conclude your tour.

Please note: the order of the visits to Assisi and Cortona are subject to change on the day of your tour.

Basilica di Santa Chiara
Your walking tour will begin at Basilica di Santa Chiara, dedicated to Saint Clare. Outside of the Basilica, your guide will point out the interestingly colored materials - the church is decorated in white and pink striped marble from a mountain near Assisi. You will also notice the belltower, which is the tallest in Assisi. When you walk inside the church, you may discover there is an unexpected emptiness - the church has only one aisle. Your guide will explain that although it once was decorated by intricate frescoes, these were all lost through time. Beneath the church, you can find the tomb of Saint Clare. For a woman who helped and influenced so many, this Basilica is a beautiful memorial. Entry is included.

Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'Assisi
Your guide will next lead you to Basilica di San Francesco, not only one of the most important religious sites in the city, but also in the entire country of Italy. Your guide will explain that it is the oldest Gothic church throughout the country, built above the tomb of Saint Francis. The church technically consists of two parts - a lower church and upper church. In the lower half, you will find the incredibly sacred tomb of San Francesco, as well as important frescoes by Cimabue and Simone Martini. The upper part of the church allows a heavenly light to glow upon ancient frescoes painted by Giotto. These colorful 28 frescoes depict the life of the Saint, forever representing a vivid celebration of life. It is said that the Basilica di San Francesco di Assisi has the best collection of art of any church in Italy. After exploring the inside of Basilica di San Francesco, your guide will lead you to exit onto a green lawn overlooking the skyline of Assisi. Entry is included.

Santa Maria degli Angeli
After discovering the most of Assisi, you will head about ten minutes away to the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It is located about two and a half miles (four kilometers) from the city center. Your guide will lead you into Santa Maria degli Angeli, but it is actually more famous for another much smaller building inside - “Porziuncola.” This very small, stone chapel once housed Saint Francis and his followers, and it is where he started the Franciscan order. Now, you will see the Porziuncola has been decorated in Gothic style frescoes, glorifying the small building. Enjoy some time to appreciate the beauty and importance of “Porziuncola.”

Such a let down

First I want to acknowledge that Victor customer service was top notch. I had trouble booking this day trip, but the agent I got on the phone was great. That being said, we were very excited to see Assisi and Cortona. It’s a long ride from Florence; our first stop was supposed to be Cortona. The guide told us that he had a special surprise stop at this beautiful lake. We got off the bus and figured out after 10 minutes that it was a cigarette break for the driver. Yes it was a pretty lake but there was absolutely nothing significant about it. So on to Cortona. A very charming old world town! Very special - we had some free time, so it was really nice to explore. Back in the bus to Assisi. We arrived and were shown the first restaurant and were told they had the best food, the best service and were reasonable. Of course, we all went in. There was one waitress for all of us (you couldn’t help thinking the tour guide knew the people there) she didn’t speak but a few English words - could not make change when it was time to go - needed an interpreter ... We were then passed along to the local guide. She was nice of course - but she talked while walking, and she was out of breath most of the time so it was difficult with her accent to understand. The group consisted of others who spoke no English, so she had 3 interpretations to go through. It felt as the time went on that she spent less and less time in English. We spent a LOT of time inside the beautiful churches along with many other groups - tricky to keep up and hear anything of value. After she was finished she passed us back to our guide from Florence. The schedule was then supposed to allow us 1.5 hours of exploration on our own, but the guide from Florence told us that we were going to see another church down the hill and we could go to their bookstore (!). We got there and it was in town (away from all the charm and history of Assisi) and there was only a church and some vendors along the street selling souvenirs. That was such a disappointment!! And a total waste of our time. So, between the lake stop cigarette break, and this end of the tour ‘bookstore’ stop, we felt truly gypped out of the best experience we were looking forward to on our trip. I only hope that one day I am able to return and try again ...

A great day out of Florence to a wonderful town

A great day out of Florence. Cortona was a nice town but the visit was too short but understandable as we were heading to Assisi. What a wonderful town it is, the history and sights were outstanding. We had a some free time to enjoy a small lunch, a coffee and a wander around the town. A guided tour through the town and the Cathedral were great. In fact i could spend a whole day in this lovely town.

This tour tries to do too much in a day. The guide had a weird way of repeating himself constantly and yet never actually said much of value. Special guide in asissi was great!

Assisi and Cortona Day Trip from Florence

Good tour. Florence traffic was terrible and took away a lot of time. Not much time left for Cortona, but Assisi was really the highlight. Guide for Assisi was very good, but tour did not give enough time to the Giotto frescoes. Tour guide was terrific (Julia?)
