Visiting Zurich for the First Time? Here's What to See and Do
Tackle Zurich like a pro with our first timer–friendly recommendations.
Limmatquai stretches through the historical core of Zurich, making it nearly impossible to miss during a day of sightseeing. Many walking tours include Limmatquai, and attractions such as the Grossmünster and Town Hall (Rathaus) can be found on or just off the street. Looking across the river, you can see Fraumünster Church and Lindenhof.
*Limmatquai is about 0.6 miles (1 km) long from the Bahnhofbrücke to Quaibrücke bridges. *Central Zurich is very walkable, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. *The street is mostly closed to vehicles, but watch out for the trams that run along it.
Limmatquai is within walking distance of Niederdorf, Bahnofstrasse, and Lake Zurich. Many trams also pass through, stopping at Central, Rathaus, and Bellevue stations.
The street is busy most of the day. Go in the morning to enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere on the water before some of the businesses open, or perhaps enjoy an evening walk to admire the lights of the city. Restaurants and shops have varying hours, but the street is particularly lively during dinnertime.
If you make it to the bottom end of Limmatquai, where the river meets Lake Zurich, keep going south to reach the residential area of Seefeld on the lake’s eastern shore. Visitors who venture out of Old Town and into Seefeld will find a waterfront promenade where you can relax and enjoy lakefront views.
