Sunnegga Tours

This sunny peak on Mount Rothorn is one of the most popular in the Zermatt-Matterhorn resort, a haven for family-friendly skiing in the winter and scenic hiking up to Blauherd and Rothorn in the summer. Take the funicular from Zermatt to explore the gentle pistes, relax on the Leisee Alpine lake, or hit the trails on foot or wheels.
The Basics

Sunnegga means “sunny corner,” and the name is apt for this spot that is often awash in sunlight when the rest of Zermatt is cloaked in clouds. A natural terrace set in the heart of the Matterhorn-Cervino Alpine area, Sunnegga is part of the Sunnegga Paradise ski area, one of the most scenic and most accessible spots from Zermatt.

The Sunnegga Express underground funicular railway runs from Zermatt to Sunnegga, where you can stop to ski, hike, explore by kick scooter or mountain cart, or dine; otherwise, continue with the Combi lift up to Blauherd, where the cable car connects to the Rothorn peak. Sunnegga is one of the most popular destinations from Zermatt, so purchase funicular tickets in advance to avoid having to wait in line.
Things to Know Before You Go
  • Kids can have fun while honing their skills on the snow at the beginner ski park and play area.
  • Rent a kick scooter or mountain cart in the summer for a thrilling turn down the slopes on wheels.
  • One of the most popular hiking paths is the Flower Trail, lined with alpine roses and other wildflowers.
  • The Leisee Alpine lake is perfect for a scenic picnic, and there is also a children’s play area.
  • The funicular is wheelchair-accessible, though there are no dedicated paths for wheelchairs once at Sunnegga.

The chic resort town of Zermatt is one of the most spectacular in Switzerland, with its theatrical backdrop of the Matterhorn looming at almost 15,000 feet (4,478 meters). The town is thick with upscale boutiques and fine-dining restaurants, but the biggest draw is the world-class skiing and lively aprés-ski scene.
