The Basics

Popular and perpetually busy, St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous monument in Venice. Avoid the long lines and save time skip-the-line tickets or opt for an after-hours tour for private evening access. While the exterior is visited on just about every city sightseeing tour, a guided tour is the best way to experience the interior, given the complexity of its art and architecture.

A guided private or small-group evening tour offers a unique and intimate experience, and the basilica is located on St. Mark’s Square, so you can easily combine a basilica tour with a gondola ride and a Doge’s Palace tour.

St Mark's Basilica After-Hours Small Group Tour with Optional Doge's Palace
Amazing is not an exaggeration. The palace and basilica were stunning. But the guide Susan truly exceeded her responsibilities and …due to unique circumstances of off-season and Covid reduced crowds…was able to give us a real behind the scenes look at the cathedral. She is a wealth of knowledge and actively thought about how to make our tour more special. And boy did it work.

Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride
We enjoyed every moment of this tour, the guide was amazing, entertaining and very informative. Here again we were overwhelmed with the history and amazing art work inside Basilica and Doges Palace. I would suggest anyone visiting Venice for first time to go on guided tour. I am sorry I forgot our guide's name, he was very helpful and provided us with extra information and was happy to answer any questions. We would go on a tour with him again S & D

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica with Terrace Access & Doge's Palace
I enjoyed the tour a lot. The guide shared a a lot of information with us and it is clear that she enjoys what she is doing. I would not have known the things if I visit these places on my own. Having a guids is important. Tour has been well organised. A lot of walking and climbing of stairs but it has been worth it at the end of the day!

St. Mark's Basilica Skip-the-Line Guided Tour - T3
Our guide was excellent and we had a small group. However, it was nearly impossible to find the meeting place!! Viator has to do a better job of explaining where to meet their tours. We had difficulty in several cities. Probably we had a small group because the meeting place was so poorly explained!!!

Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride
As the description of the tour suggests, if you're in Venice for a short time and want to see the highlights in one day, this is an excellent tour. Roberta brought Venice to life as we walked through squares, over bridges and visited famous sites. Really enjoyable and full of history.

Skip-the-Line: Doge's Palace & St. Mark's Basilica Guided Small-Group Tour
Very informative tour of the Doge's palace. Guide was knowledgeable and easy to understand. Pace was good as well. Shorter time in Basillica but still worth it. Skip the line saved a lot of time.

When to Get There

The basilica is most crowded at midday, so begin or end your Venice tour with a morning or late-afternoon visit. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while Venice is relatively quiet from November through February (aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays, and during Carnival).

The Pala d’Oro

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is famous for Michelangelo's Pietà and Florence’s Duomo is known for Brunelleschi’s dome, but St. Mark’s Basilica’s greatest treasure—the stunning Pala d'Oro—is older than even those masterpieces. This glittering gold and enamel altarpiece from AD 976 is considered one of the most important, refined examples of Byzantine enamel in the world.
