The Basics

At Venice's best-known local market, stalls stand cheek by jowl hawking familiar seafood as well as local specialties from the Venetian lagoon. Browsing the selection is a great way to get an idea of what's local and fresh before you peruse restaurant menus later in the day.

Many walking tours of Venice include a stroll through the Rialto Market along with stops at Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace and a gondola ride. An excellent way to visit is as part of a food tour of the city that combines the market with tastings ofcicchetti, Venetian snacks.

Amazing tour
The food and wine was excellent, local and off the beaten track (and there was lots of it!). Alice was an incredible guide, she knew what she was talking about, was very friendly, gave us lots of history and was so knowledgeable. Couldn't recommend this tour enough.

Rialto Market Food and Wine Lunchtime Tour of Venice
This tour was a true highlight of our trip to Italy. Super fun and informative. Also a great way to feel like you are experiencing Venice more like an insider. The history tours are great, but your definitely a tourist. With this tour you feel more like a local who is out for the afternoon with friends visiting your favorite food and wine haunts.

Venice Food Tour Including Rialto Market and Cicchetti
We wanted to understand more about the food history of Venice and this tour was amazing. A lovely mix of history, food and locations within Rialto, st marks and cannaregio. The story of Chichetti and Tramaezzeni as well as spritz and cuttlefish ink were all fold while eating the goodies. The inclusion of a gondola traghetto ferry ride from Rialto over to Cannaregio was a great way of experiencing a gondola. Our guide was informative and very good.

The experience exceeded all expectations. Lorenzo coordinated everything perfectly. Made a delicious meal fully from scratch - pasta, focaccia bread, tomato sauce & tiramisu. Yum!

Rialto Market tour, Cooking Class and Wine Tasting
Fun time with Lorenzo, it felt like an authentic Italian cooking experience! Lorenzo was very knowledgeable and fun! Meeting point was clear, and communication was easy. We made our own puree sauce with fresh ingredients, noodles, tiramisu, and even tried venetian liver and onions which was way better than it sounds! Thanks for a great experience on our wonderful vacation!

Tasty Rialto Farmers Market Food Tour in Venice with Wine Tasting & Sightseeing
This was a great food tour of some traditional Venice Cicchetti and wine tasting. The walk around the Rialto area was fun and informative. Silvia is a great tour guide and gave us lots of history about Venice as well as the food we ate. I would highly recommend this tour.

Fish shopping in Rialto and home cooking in Murano
The guide and the fish stands. The variety of fish types was unexpected. It was fun to buy fresh fish and then cook and eat it.

Rialto Market Food and Wine Lunchtime Tour of Venice
Ana was our guide for a chiccetti tour near the Rialto Market. Her choices were great. We also got some great tips on restaurants for dinner that we were very happy with.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • As with any busy outdoor market in Italy, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your valuables.

  • Be sure to bring your camera, as the stalls filled with artful displays of fresh seafood make for great photo opportunities.

  • Tours through the Rialto Market are on foot, so wear comfortable shoes and a sun hat.

  • The Rialto Bridge is essentially a flight of stairs going up and down, so getting to the market from across the canal may be challenging with a wheelchair or stroller. Instead, take vaporetto Line 1, which is wheelchair accessible, to Rialto Mercato.

How to Get There

Cross the Rialto Bridge from the San Marco side of the Grand Canal to San Polo, then turn right and follow the edge of the canal to Campo della Pescaria, the open square where the Erberia (fruit and vegetable market) is located. Beyond that is the Pescheria, the covered fish market.

When to Get There

The Rialto Market is open Tuesday through Saturday, and the stands are usually closed up by lunch. To see them at their most interesting (and to pick up anything you'd like for a picnic lunch), be there in the early morning.

Food Markets in Italy
