The Basics

A sail down the Grand Canal is a trip through centuries of Venetian history, as historic palaces dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries rise out of the water along most of the route. Though stretches of the canal are lined with walkways, many of the important landmarks can be seen only from the water, so a small-group Grand Canal boat tour or combination walking-and-canal tour is by far the best way to go. For a historical tour of the canal, opt for a daytime sightseeing tour so you can see the ornate facades of Venice’s famous palaces. For a romantic journey, choose a moonlit gondola ride. And for a truly Venetian experience, opt for a gondola ride with a serenade!

The Secrets of the Grand Canal - Boat Tour
We had a great time on this tour. It was just the right length and gave us a solid overview of the city, including the residential/less touristy areas. Our guide explained the sites we were passing and why certain areas were memorable in popular culture (i.e. hotel where George Clooney got married, fire station features in a film, etc.) And at the end of the tour she gave us great recommendations for restaurants and a rooftop bar on the grand canal!

Venice: Charming Gondola Ride on the Grand Canal
Guide was very friendly and given tour in English too which was helpful. Did Gandola ride on Grand canal, was amazed by the experience. This ride didn't take to Railto bridge. I think we'll have to check the route the ride takes before booking it. I would recommend this to a friend

Small Group Motorboat Cruise: Grand Canal & Basilica San Giorgio Maggiore
GREAT TOUR!!! Our tour guide was phenomenal and she even treated us with some delicious Prosecco on our tour. She was so knowledgeable and the tour was the perfect amount of time and far from boring! We saw amazing views of Venice, we went down the Grand Canal but also other areas that we would’ve never saw on our own.

Venice Private Gondola Ride on Grand Canal
A beautiful Gondola, an expert Gondoliere, an exquisite city at sunset... What could be more perfect?? This was a remarkably precise 30 minute ride through the side canals and the down a section of the Grand Canal. The launch site was accurately and clearly described, easy to find, and convenient. Definitely recommend making a reservation--only those parties who booked in advance were invited to the boarding line.

The Secrets of the Grand Canal - Boat Tour
This was a very nice experience! An hour long and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. She offered to take our photos at just the right spots and even made us a dinner reservation for after the boat ride was over. It was technically a taxi boat. While nice, you could do a similar thing for less if you didn't want a guide. Would've been nice if they had a bottle of water for us or even a glass of wine for the ride around. Other than that it was great!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Most Grand Canal gondola rides begin or end in St. Mark’s Square, home to St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and include a few picturesque minor canals along the way.

  • Alongside Rome and Florence as one of the most popular destinations in Italy, Venice can get extremely crowded. To avoid a long wait at the motor launch, book your Venice tour tickets in advance.

  • The palaces along the Grand Canal have architectural styles that span from the Byzantine to the Renaissance, and are best appreciated with an expert tour guide who can explain their history and importance.

  • Note that Venice and the Grand Canal feature a great number of bridges, many of which are not wheelchair accessible.

The Islands of Venice

Venice is made up of over 100 small islands, so for a different perspective of this unique city on the water, take a boat tour to one of the quieter outlying islands such as Murano, famous for its glassblowing industry; Burano, known for its lace-making artisans; or Torcello, thought to be the first populated island the in Venetian lagoon.
