Val d'Orcia

Val D’Orcia, Tuscany, Italy

The Basics

The Val d'Orcia, a favorite subject of Renaissance painters and modern photographers, covers a small area of Tuscany between the town of Siena and Mount Amiata, and is known for its beautiful landscapes, medieval towns, and excellent cuisine. Take a Val d'Orcia tour to visit the villages of Montalcino and Montepulciano, and to sample their local Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines—perhaps paired with pecorino cheeses from nearby Pienza—during a wine tasting session. Other delightful small towns worth a visit on a private tour of the Val d'Orcia are San Quirico d'Orcia, famous for its olive oil, and Bagno Vignoni, home to historic thermal baths.

We took the tour with Duona and it we had a great time! The tour group was big.. probably about 25-30 people in a coach bus.The cities we visited were beautiful, and the wine tastings were fun. Perfect tour to take if you want to get to meet fellow travelers as well.

Pienza, Val d'Orcia, Montalcino wine and Pecorino cheese PRIVATE TOUR from SIENA
This was by far our favorite experience of the whole trip. We booked it kind of last minute but everyone was so accommodating. Roberto was our driver and he was so kind and knowledgeable. We enjoyed every aspect. We were able to try fresh olive oil, cheeses, honey, and wine! We also had the most amazing lunch in the countryside. We tell everyone we know how much we loved this trip. If you are on the fence, book it! You will not regret it!!

Pienza, Val d'Orcia, Montalcino wine and Pecorino cheese PRIVATE TOUR from SIENA
What a fantastic tour! Our driver, Roberto, was knowledgeable, fun, accommodating, and flexible for what we wanted to experience. Visited two beautiful, smaller wineries (both very different), stopped to explore Montalcino, and had the most amazing lunch (and more wine) at a small local farm/b&b. They served wild boar, fresh home grown vegetables, their own balsamic, and so much more. The people at the farm was so extremely friendly and welcoming. Absolutely recommend this tour!

Montalcino, Orcia Valley, Pienza, and Montepulciano: Wine- and Cheese-Tasting Guided Tour from Florence
We traveled on a small bus with 27 in our group. Giulia kept our group informed on what to expect and gave us many interesting details on the areas we were seeing. The towns were lovely.

Montalcino, Orcia Valley, Pienza, and Montepulciano: Wine- and Cheese-Tasting Guided Tour from Florence
I thought this was a great tour and I loved that you visited three towns. The tour guide was wonderful, really friendly and informative. The bus was comfortable as well. My only comment is that I wished we had more time in Montepulciano. Highly recommend.

Private Tour: Medieval Val d'Orcia by Minivan from Florence
This was an awesome trip. Our driver spoke good English and drove us around to see countryside views that we told him we were hoping to see. He had great knowledge of the area and the history of wineries, local specialties, agriculture, etc. He even found a farm to table restaurant that was off the beaten path and managed to get us in to a already full dining hall for a fantastic meal. It was a great day.

Private Tour: Orcia Valley to Montalcino and Montepulciano with Brunello Wine Tasting
There are not enough great things I can say about our Tour with Becky. He was professional and very knowledgeable about the area. He took us to 1 wineary and then a tasting with a lunch at another local wineary. This was the best experience I have had in Tuscany and would recommend them to anyone looking for an amazing experience in Tuscany. I plan on being back soon!

Our driver, Darrio, was excellent. He made time to show us a few extra local places. The lunch at the farm was incredible and possibly the best part.

Tuscan Food and Wine Tour of Val d'Orcia from Florence
Location to connect with my tour - Easy to find location if you learn to use Trams - Used T1 from Florence SMN going towards Villa Constanza - got down Porta Al Prato - and the pickup was diagonally opposite — Checkin - Smooth and Fast. — Tour Guides & Tour - 1. We had literally a united nation traveling with us so there were tour details explained in multiple languages - 2. Serena who guided us in English was knowledgeable and helpful 3. Tour started in Montalcino winery - excellent options of wine tasting - sadly we were given just a 15 mins break in Montalcino 4. Next stop was Pienza - I would have liked to bypass that town altogether as found it very ordinary - wish we had more time in Montalcino - Pienza was a longer break as it was also a lunch stop 4. Montepulciano is as breathtaking as described and we reached there in the later part of the afternoon - the time given passed really fast - as there is just plenty to see - Montepulciano is definitely a no no for any one with issues in walking - as every lane is a steep climb up or down - and yes it is very easy to get lost here.

Montalcino, Orcia Valley, Pienza, and Montepulciano: Wine- and Cheese-Tasting Guided Tour from Florence
Great tour to see the country side of Tuscany and small villages Tour guide was very informative and let us know what to expect all along the tour Down side - thought this would be a small tour of 25 and ended up being a large group with half English and half South American - a lot of work for the tour guide to speak in both languages all day long - disappointed it wasn’t more personal

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The scenery around the Val d'Orcia area is truly picturesque, so don’t forget your camera.

  • Some of Italy’s most prestigious wines are produced in the Val d'Orcia, so wine lovers will especially appreciate exploring the area’s wineries and tasting rooms.

  • There is a small amount of walking during most Tuscany tours, either through hilltop towns or across winery vineyards; comfortable shoes and a sun hat are recommended.

  • Winery visits may not be appropriate for young children.

How to Get There

Val d'Orcia is located about an hour south of Florence and is an easy day trip from Rome, Florence, Pisa, San Gimignano, and Siena. There is little public transportation between the towns and wineries in this area, so by far the best way to explore is by joining a small-group tour with transportation included.

When to Get There

The Val d'Orcia is lovely year-round but is particularly interesting to visit in the fall, when the grapes and olives are harvested and many towns hold wine and olive oil festivals.

Famous Tuscan Landscapes

The Val d'Orcia is just one of many areas in Tuscany known for its striking scenery. The stark chalk hills of the Crete Senesi and the wooded countryside of Chianti are also beautiful—and are equally popular wine tour destinations.
