The Basics

Set on the edge of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on the Yucatan Peninsula, Muyil is a worthwhile detour with a number of significant ruins to explore, as well as an observation tower that offers views overlooking the neighboring lagoon. The ancient settlement is estimated to date back to as early as 300 BC. Remaining structures include the Sacbé, a 15-foot-wide (5-meter-wide) ancient road, and the Pink Palace, known for its well-preserved stuccos. Tours from Tulum and Cancun combine stops at Sian Ka'an and Muyil.

Great excursion, highly recommend
The river float is amazing!!! The muyil visit was alright. Not very impressive compared to chichen itza but the walk from there through the jungle to the water was a fun and interesting experience. But the river float is everything. Cannot recommend highly enough. Lea was amazing. Kind patient and knowledgeable. She also took us for some delicious roadside tacos that I can’t stop thinking about.

Great tour, loved learning about the plants and floating in the lagoon

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour from Tulum
We were able to get picked up at our hotel. The tour guide, Luigi, was on time and very friendly. He was very knowledgeable about the plants, trees and history. He also used to be a photographer so took great group photos! The lunch was vegetarian; we had burritos, hibiscus drink and carrot cake. Floating in the lagoon was magical! This was my second time doing this tour, and I would do it again if given the opportunity.
Great float, boat ride and cultural tour

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour from Tulum
Luigi and crew were super. He gave us a lot of cultural information at the beginning. The jungle walk was fun with all his knowledge of plants. I am glad we all climbed the tower to look over the lagoon. The boat rides are fun and the float is the most relaxing thing ever. A nice tour.
Don’t miss it.

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour from Tulum
We loved everything about this afternoon trip - Paloma the guide, Danny the driver, our fellow travelers on the tour… everything just clicked. Paloma was full of interesting information about Muyil and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, and we personally enjoyed viewing these ruins even more than Chichen Itza (which was very hot, exposed, and crowded but still impressive). The lunch was wonderful, but the highlight had to be the amazing float through the jungle canals. Wonderful day!!!
I think lunch should be a little bit earlier.

Private tour to arqueological zone Muyil and Sian Kaan Biosfhere
Great guide and driver, the tour of Muyil is interesting and just the right length of time before hopping in boat with a well-seasoned boat captain who navigates the Sian Ka'an area like he's done it a million times. Beautiful water and Flora and fauna. Don't miss this trip. Everyone was great and accommodating.
Fun day with a family!

Fun tour with a wonderful guide Lea. We started with visiting the archeological site, then walked through jungle to the lagoons where we took a boat. Then went swimming in the lagoon, best part!

An excellent tour led by a knowledgeable, friendly guide. The boat ride in the Lagoons within Sian Ka’An biosphere reserve and the experience of floating within an ancient Mayan canal were especially wonderful and memorable. Highly recommended.

What a memorable trip. Sammy was a great guide; very intelligent! Really liked floating down through the mangroves and tall grasses. Didn't care much for the boat ride; I have a bad back

Private Birdwatching Tour in Sian Ka'an Muyil
My guide Miguel Amar Uribe, he was very knowledgable not just about the wildlife but also the area as well as the Mayan history. Miguel is very personable, easy to speak with and has a great deal of knowledge. Anyone that is lucky enough to use him as a guide will not regret it. Gracias Miguel, hasta la próxima

How to Get There

Muyil is located by the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, around 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Tulum. If you’re driving, take Highway 307; a sign marks the entrance. You can also grab a bus (or colectivo) from Tulum to Felipe Carrillo, a town located on the edge of the reserve. Wait time for a bus is typically 15 minutes.

When to Get There

The best time to experience the Muyil ruins is during the region’s dry season (from December to April), when there are fewer mosquitos and less humidity. But this is also when you’ll run into the biggest crowds; January to March is the busiest time for tourism. If you’re traveling on your own, try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the bus tours.
