The Basics

Appreciate the Siena Cathedral’s wealth of art and architecture on a guided tour. Skip-the-line entrance tickets grant access to the church, crypt, and baptistry (Battistero di San Giovanni), along with the adjacent Piccolomini Library—frescoed by Pinturicchio—and the Museo dell'Opera. Explore the cathedral complex as part of a city walking tour or on a day trip from Florence to Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano. Inside the cathedral, highlights include the marble pulpit and floor, numerous statues, and the Chigi and Saint John the Baptist chapels.

Wonderful Tour!
Really a great tour. Got to see many historic buildings, churches and the main duomo. The explanation and descriptions of the symbols in the duomo was very interesting and informative. Also, the story of the neighborhoods and the annual Palio horse race from the central Piazza was special. Grazie!

The Tour guide is wonderful. She is very informed. Also, she is thoughtful about the Covid situation so suggested masks at appropriate times.

Can't figure out where to pick up your skip-the-line tickets? It's the crypt.

Skip-the-Line Siena Cathedral Duomo Complex Entrance Ticket
We visited on a June day with thousands and thousands of tourists everywhere. The regular line to the cathedral was only a few minutes long. Any time we saved with our skip-the-line tickets was cancelled by the more than 15 minutes we spent trying to figure out where to exchange our Viatour voucher for actual tickets. It turns out, you have to go to the crypt.

The guide in Siena was ok. The one we had in Bologna was great. She could have talked more and not included so many personal information. We overall learned a few things and it was a good experience. Have had better tour guides.

Claudia was an excellent guide who brought to life the history of Siena, the Duomo, and the life of St Catherine. It was a perfect amount of time to stroll leisurely, stopping to enjoy certain sites while she explained the meaning of the site.

Siena Historic City Walking Tour with Cathedral Option
The guide was excellent She really knew her history of Siena. She related how the city brings mideaval concepts to how it's neighborhoods operate to this day. Her English was excellent. The only minor flaw was with the radio transmission. It was better to turn off the radio and just listen to her speaking voice.

Discovering Siena and the Cathedral
Such an incredible tour. Our tour guide Shokla was so kind, funny and knowledgeable. She shared such wonderful stories of history, art and palio day. She was accommodating for my aging parents who struggled with the hills in the city. This tour was a highlight!

This tour was fabulous. The tour guide knows all kinds of important information about Siena including history and fun facts. She also takes you on routes through the city that steer clear from the crowds. Include the Cathedral tour with the walking tour. She recommended a great place for lunch off the beaten path. Highly recommend!

When to Get There

Siena's cathedral has a breathtaking graffito floor, one of the most impressive in Italy. There are 56 marble panels of biblical and historical scenes, most hidden behind a protective covering and revealed for just a few weeks each summer. Try to time your visit for this period to view this masterpiece.

Siena Cathedral History and the Museo dell'Opera

The cathedral’s construction began in the early 1200s, and after almost a century, Giovanni Pisano, whose style was heavily influenced by his father, Nicola, completed the beautiful facade. Despite an impressive cathedral, Siena's ambitious ruling families decided in the 14th century to double the size of the existing structure into the New Cathedral (Duomo Nuovo). The plague stopped the plan, and today Museo dell'Opera occupies the only nave that was completed. Museo dell'Opera holds many of the cathedral's most important works of art, including Giovanni Pisano’s statues of prophets and philosophers that once adorned the facade and Duccio di Buoninsegna's Maesta. Duccio di Buoninsegna designed the huge rose window, and the gable’s glittering Venetian mosaics were added in the 19th century.
