The Sarajevo Tunnel (Tunel Spasa) is an underground tunnel turned war museum, and the best way to learn about the Siege of Sarajevo in Bosnia. Dug out by hand with shovels and picks, the 2,625-foot (800-meter)tunnel served as a lifeline for the city in 1993, connecting the Dobrinja and Butmir neighborhoods to the free Bosnian territory just beyond the Sarajevo Airport. After the Bosnian War ended, the house whose cellar served as an entrance to the tunnel was turned into a museum.

Visitors can watch an 18-minute movie about the war, the blockade and the tunnel experience, and view photographs, maps, military equipment and uniforms, as well as a variety of tools and documents. Visitors can also enter about 20 meters of the tunnel. The museum is a stop on nearly all war-themed tours of Sarajevo and guides can offer valuable insight and perspective.

Half-Day Tour to the Tunnel of Hope in Sarajevo

The siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a city in the history of modern warfare. Sarajevo was under constant blockade and artillery fire for 1425 days (05.04.1992-29.02.1996). During the siege of Sarajevo, the only way in and out of the city was by using the handmade tunnel built under the UN-controlled airport. Tunnel, often called Tunnel of Hope or Gates of Sarajevo was the only in and out of the city. A tunnel was built in order to link the city of Sarajevo, which was entirely cut off, with Bosnian-held territory on the other side of the Sarajevo Airport, an area controlled by the United Nations. The construction of Tunnel allowed food, supplies, and humanitarian aid to come into the city, and allowed people to get out. On this tour, you can find out more about life in besieged Sarajevo and how the people of Sarajevo managed to survive 1425 days of siege.

The siege of Sarajevo – the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina – was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. After being initially besieged by the forces of the Yugoslav People's Army, Sarajevo was besieged by the Army of Republika Srpska from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996 (1,425 days) during the Bosnian War. City of Sarajevo was under the siege three times longer than Stalingrad and more than a year longer than the siege of Leningrad. During the siege, people of Sarajevo experienced shortage of food, water, medicine, basic necessities and atrocities unimaginable for late 20th century. On this tour you will have an opportunity to find out more about the siege of Sarajevo, fall of Yugoslavia and how Sarajevo proudly managed to keep it’s title of multi-religious and multi-cultural center of the region.

The Art of Survival Tour

This tour and the museums we see tell the story of the dark and sad part of Sarajevo’s history. Only twenty years ago, citizens of this city spent the longest siege in the history of modern warfare. For almost four years they were exposed to continuous attacks by various weapons, without electricity, water, any connection to the outside world. The way Sarajevo’s citizens survived is rightly called “The Art of Survival”. What really happened in Sarajevo from ’92 to ’95? What did famous War Tunnel mean for the City of Sarajevo and how was it built? Did really over 1600 children have to lose their lives during the siege of this heroic city?
