Pilatus Railways (Pilatus Bahnen)

Brünigstrasse 2, Alpnach, 6053

The Basics

Pilatus Bahnen operates three main routes up Mount Pilatus. A cogwheel railway—the steepest cogwheel railway in the world—runs from Alpnachstad up the south side of the mountain to the summit station of Pilatus Kulm. From Kreins, the Panorama Gondolas take off up the mountain to Fräkmüntegg station at 4,649 feet (1,417 meters). From here, an aerial cableway, known as the Dragon Ride, heads up to the summit.

A popular choice for summer visitors is the so-called Golden Round Trip from Lucerne, which includes a boat cruise across Lake Lucerne and a ride on the cogwheel railway to the top of the mountain, before descending by the aerial cableway and gondola.

Mt. Pilatus Must Do Tour
Our guide, Robert, was personable and informative. The different modes of transportation throughout our day made the trip very exciting… bus, gondola to cogwheel. SO much fun!! Views were spectacular! Really enjoyed watching paragliders leaving from Mt. Pilatus to the valley below. Spectacular tour!!! Must do in Switzerland!!

Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip incl. Lake Cruise Small Group Tour from Luzern
Ullie (sp?) was a great guide. The narrow gauge train wasn't in service yet so we didn't experience that. But the cable cars were enjoyable. There were a fair amount of clouds that came in and out which made for some beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, we couldn't see the lake from up top but the mountains were beautiful. The boat ride on the lake was nice to see scenery and more good pics. Having Ullie guide us made for an easy day to see everything and not worry about logistics.

Upgraded to My titlis which I had done years ago thanks to Pedro’s recommendation. Loved every second of it. Surreal views of the alps. The iceflyer was absolutely amazing

Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip incl. Lake Cruise Small Group Tour from Luzern
Enjoyable tour with just four in our group. Unfortunately we did not notice, that the cogwheel train does not run. Peter was a nice tourguide with a lot of knowledge about everyday life. It was great, that we did not get bored with historical dates and numbers.

Mt Pilatus Self-Guided Tour from Kriens or Alpnachstad
A lovely experience it was a shame we couldn't do the other activities which would have been included in the tickets price. Gorgeous views overall and recommend as cheaper alternative to Jungfrau.

Mount Pilatus Photography Day Tour
The most memorable part of our day in Lucerne was the incredible views that changed as the clouds moved over Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus. We had a perfect day for the weather, and our guide, Luis, was well-informed and kindly took several photos of us together!

Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip with Lake Cruise Private Tour from Basel
This was an excellent tour. It included several kinds of transportation - train, ship, cog railway, gondola from the top of Mt. Pilatus, and bus. Our guide Adrian was great and extremely helpful. The views from the top of Mt. Pilatus were amazing and riding in the oldest/longest cog railway in the world was very interesting. The tour includes a lot of venues in a single day but got us back in Basel for dinner.

Beautiful Views from Mt Pilatus

Mount Pilatus Summer Day Trip from Zurich
The cable car trip up to Mt. Pilatus was fun. We got to see gorgeous sights, take a lot of pictures and have a nice lunch up on top. We also enjoyed the cogwheel train ride down the mountain. The twelve hour day with a lot of time on the bus which made for a very long day, but it's the best way to get to go up the mountain.

When to Get There

Cable cars and gondolas operate year-round, with regular departures. Queues are common in high season (July to August) so opt for an early start to avoid a long wait. The cogwheel railway runs from May to October, so if you want to take the Golden Round Trip, plan a summer visit.
