There is news of the marble of Ornavasso since Roman times, as documented by stems and altars of the first and second century AD. preserved in the Civic Archaeological Collections of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. Observing the valley we can see the beginning of the waterway that from the Toce to Lake Maggiore, then along the Ticino and the Naviglio Grande up to the Darsena of Milan, favored the use of Ornavasso marble in numerous and illustrious monuments of the Lombard area. Looking up we see the Candoglia quarry: the vein of marble that emerges from Ornavasso crosses the Toce valley and over the centuries has been excavated first at the base of the mountain where the remains of a furnace are still visible today. then in the trenches and up up to more levels of quarry in the tunnel.
