The Basics

The Amalfi Coast can get uncomfortably crowded during summer, and the road along the coast is often plagued by gridlock. Avoid the traffic by booking a private boat tour that docks at each of the major villages with free time to explore on foot, or join a small group for a full day tour by bus that leaves the hassle of navigating and parking to a professional driver. From the Amalfi Coast, you can take a cruise to Capri and Ischia, day trips with a local guide to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and sightseeing tours to Mount Vesuvius, Paestum, the Bay of Naples, and the surrounding region of Campania.

Perfect family day trip
Loved this experience despite the rain! We traveled as a family of 5 and all enjoyed ourselves. Our tour guide for the bus was great. We’ll organized… from the rest stops to the time at each site. Also had another tour guide just for Pompeii who was very knowledgeable. We kept to a schedule but didn’t feel rushed at any point. Spent at least 2 hours in Amalfi which was perfect for lunch and taking in the beauty of it all!!!

Amalfi Coast from Rome Private Day Trip
This day trip to the Amalfi coast was made even more exceptional by Ivano Esposito! He was an amazing tour guide - taking us to a Lemoncello factory - and an amazing lunch in Positano! He made this day trip a memory we will always cherish.

Semi Private Pompeii, Positano & Amalfi Coast Tour from Rome
My mom and I were picked up early in the morning by our amazing driver Giancarlo, stopped for breakfast on the way to Pompeii and had an insightful tour at the ruins of Pompeii. From there we went to a delicious, private lunch in Sorrento with amazing scenery. After that we saw 2 viewpoints of the Amalfi coast and ended our tour in Positano where we could walk around and shop for an hour and a half. Giancarlo drove us back to our final destination at exactly the predicted arrival time.

Amalfi to Capri Private Boat Tour
We had a wonderful day. The views to Amalfi Coast from the ocean are amazing. Our captain Enzo is a fine young gentleman and mixed very well with our group. He took us to the perfect swimming spots, showed us some amazing caves, arrange our lunch in Capri Island and gave us some time to look around. A must do tour if you visit Amalfi!

Amalfi Coast Small group Tour by Boat from Sorrento
We had a great day. Hotel pick up was smooth as well as drop off. Staff in the boat where great. We got to see the amalfi coast and swim in the sea. Even in October I’d recommend! Had enough time in each place. We let aviator know I was 20 weeks pregnant and they where super helpful and reassuring. Contacting me to let us know they’d let the boat staff know and was best for me to sit at the back of the boat. Recommend booking through them

Amalfi & Ravello Tour from Positano
What an incredible day we spent with Stephania. She was very friendly and helpful with not only driving us around the coast, but giving us so much information about the history of this beautiful city. We visited the shops and beautiful church in Ravello. Walked the gardens at Villa Cimbrone with spectacular views of Amalfi coast. She was very helpful with recommendations and making aur day amazing.

Small-Group Amalfi Coast Day Cruise from Positano
This was awesome! The weather forecast was not good the day we scheduled but the they accommodated our schedule and made sure we were still able to get a boat tour. I heard a lot of people say you cannot go to the Amalfi coast without doing a boat tour, and they were right! The views are unbelievable and it’s a must! Highly recommended this tour. It was about 3 1/2 hours and we had some time in amalfi city.

Private One Day Tour from Rome to Positano Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast
Wonderful trip to the beautiful Amalfi coast. Was fabulous not having to worry about driving or traffic. Loved the countryside and the time spent actually in Sorrento and Positano just walking around and taking in the sights.

Amalfi Coast: full-day tour from Rome
Fabulous trip down the Amalfi Coast. Our guide Roberta & driver Massimo were superb! Worth the cost!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Bring a hat and sunblock, and wear comfortable clothing and footwear, as much of your time touring the Amalfi Coast will be spent outdoors.

  • Most of the villages along the Amalfi Coast are set on the water's edge, but Ravello—home of the elegant Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone—is perched on the clifftop and must be reached by car or bus.

  • The towns along the Amalfi Coast are steep, and may be a challenge for those with limited mobility. An excellent alternative is a private tour by boat that does not require much walking.

How to Get to There

The Amalfi Coast is in southern Italy between Naples and Salerno, both of which are large cruise ports and transportation hubs. There is no train service along the Amalfi Coast, so you must take the local bus to the villages along the coast; buses depart from Salerno or Sorrento (you can take the train from Rome or Naples to Sorrento, then transfer to the bus). There are also ferries from Sorrento to Amalfi and, in summer, Positano.

When to Get There

The entire coastline is crowded in summer; during winter, smaller villages like Positano and Ravello essentially shutter for the season. The best times of the year to visit, if you want to avoid crowds, are spring and fall.

The Grottoes

The Blue Grotto is on the island of Capri just off the Amalfi Coast; the Emerald Grotto is instead on the coast itself.
