While it was almost totally destroyed during World War II air raids in 1944 (like the rest of Frankfurt’s Altstadt), Römerberg Square has since been rebuilt according to the medieval style. Today, the narrow, half-timbered buildings that line the square—including the six that make up the famed Ostzeile complex—are celebrated for their beauty. In addition to its heritage architecture, and many cafes and restaurants, the square is also home to the beautiful Römer (Frankfurt’s City Hall). Given its importance, Römerberg Square features on numerous walking tours and Altstadt itineraries.
