Gibraltar

Off of Queen's Road, British territory, located on the southern coast of Spain

The Basics

Many travelers visit Gibraltar on a day trip from other destinations on the Costa del Sol, such as Malaga, Marbella, Cadiz, or Tarifa. Aside from journeying by cable car to the top of the fabled rock for its stellar views of the Spain and Morocco coastlines, visitors to this unusual slice of Europe can catch a concert inside St. Michael’s Cave, shop duty-free using the Gibraltar pound along Main Street, tour the Moorish Castle, or go dolphin-watching in the Bay of Gibraltar.

Highly recommended
Loved the trip. Took us around 2 and a half to 3 hours to get there due to pick ups which was expected and no bother. When we got there we were given over an hour to explore the main city which was great and gave us time to eat our lunch which you could bring with you or could eat out with the time you're given. After we were taken around the city and up the rock to the cave and monkeys with our tour guide who was amazing! Loved seeing the moneys and the cave, and the views were amazing. Definitely an experience that's worth the travel time!

Gibraltar Sightseeing: Classic Rock Tour (Private)
We booked the private tour with Tommy. Tommy was kind enough to let us re-schedule the day of the tour at relatively short notice due to bad weather (rain). When we did the tour, we were immediately impressed with Tommy's enthusiasm and knowledge. It was also great to be shown around by someone who was born on Gibraltar. The tour was certainly memorable and we got to see most of the sites of Gibraltar. A must not miss tour (with Tommy) and very highly recommended.

Gibraltar Full Day Tour from Seville
This was a great day trip from Seville. It’s a long day but the destination makes it worth the while. Our guide Petra did a great job keeping the tour on schedule as we had passport controls to navigate and then meet up with local tour buses for the main tour of Gibraltar. There was plenty of time to take photos along the strait of Gibraltar as well as touring the caves and watching the monkeys playing. We had about an hour and half for lunch and a little shopping. All in all a good day!

EBike Rock To The Top Tour Gibraltar
Excellent activity & a brilliant, fun way to see Gibraltar. Maybe a little too unorganised at the start & we ran out of time to see everything at the end. Thoroughly enjoyed it & would recommend it.

Knowable guide that went the extra effort to make our experience memorable. Our guide knew the area and history of each location. We also got a tour of the great beaches available.

EBike Rock To The Top Tour Gibraltar
Never been on an E-bike before and this was the perfect time to try one out as going up the mountain would have been impossible. Do not book a regular bike tour with the same itinerary unless you can bike in the tour de France. Just an average Joe or someone who enjoys some physical activity this is the tour for you. Really awesome tour that had two guides one in the front and one in the back to make sure everyone stuck together. A great time and I would do this tour again.

Nice day trip. Petra is a great guide. Easy to understand and helpful. Right balance of tour and free time. They went out of their way to drop people near their hotels.

Gibraltar Sightseeing Day Trip from Costa del Sol
The bus picked us up at our hotel 10 minutes early, which was wonderful. It was a very pleasurable ride to Gibraltar. Our tour guide to the rock was outstanding and the view from the top was amazing. The Monkees performed royally and the keys were truly something to see. We had time to kill so we went into the town and sat outside and ate a wonderful lunch and saw a British soldier parade go by. What a treat that was. This was a wonderful tour and everything was superb. This is a must see trip.

Gibraltar: Official Rock Private Tour With Transport
Our tour guide was very good! He was informative and knew a lot about the history. The only thing I would change is to stop and see more. It seemed like we were only gone around a hour which seemed quick.

How to Get to Gibraltar

The Gibraltar International Airport has daily flights to and from London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Marrakech. A popular alternative is the Malaga Airport 75 miles (120 km) to the east. The easiest way to reach Gibraltar from Spain is on an organized tour, but independent travelers can also reach the border by bus from Seville, Malaga, Cadiz, Granada, and Algeciras. Those driving should expect long delays at the Spanish border.

When to Get There

For the best combination of warm, comfortable weather and fewer crowds, plan your Gibraltar trip during spring or autumn. July, August, and September are the hottest months (average highs in the mid 80s F (29° C), but sea breezes often keep the temperature comfortable. Most of Gibraltar’s rainfall occurs during November, December, and January, but typically only in short spells.

The Great Siege of Gibraltar

In 1783 Spanish and French forces made an unsuccessful attempt to capture Gibraltar from the British, who were at the time distracted by the Revolutionary War. The siege lasted for three years and seven months—the longest ever endured by the British armed forces. The labyrinth of underground passages known as the Great Siege Tunnels were largely responsible for the British victory; today, they are open to visitors and remain one of history’s most impressive examples of defense engineering.
