The Basics

Uzès is a popular day trip destination from both Avignon and Nîmes, and is often coupled with a visit to the Pont du Gard aqueduct; tours typically cover highlights such as the Ducal Palace, Uzès Cathedral, and the Medieval Garden. Held in the main square of Place aux Herbes, the bi-weekly markets are popular with both locals and travelers. If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss a visit to the HARIBO museum, located just outside of the city.

Awesome experience!
Pont du Gard was amazing. Ann was a fantastic guide. She was punctual on the pick up, spoke excellent English, knew her history of the sites and was a great driver on the twisty hilly roads.

Half Day Pont-du-Gard, Uzès, Nîmes Tour from Avignon
The guide, “Terry,” was knowledgeable and friendly and rearranged the tour to make the most of the unusually rainy weather. Also, he went out of his way to help us catch a bus after the tour.

GREAT HALF DAY TOUR TO NIMES, UZES AND COUNTRYSIDE

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
This tour was very good for seeing a little of Nimes, Uzes and the Pont du Gard and was the only way we could have done it in the time.. We would have liked more time to explore Nimes ideally. The minivan was very clean and comfortable and the guide extremely knowledgeable - it was like a university education in the area's history! Guillaime was very personable and happy to answer all sorts of questions. We enjoyed the morning and would recommend the tour.

Praise for our Guide Thierry and the Roman Tour in General

Half Day Pont-du-Gard, Uzès, Nîmes Tour from Avignon
Our guide for the day, Thierry, did much more than required to make our day a special one. Moreover, he knew his local history and its larger context -- after all, the day is all about Roman history -- and he also managed to work in some medieval history, too. I particularly enjoyed the Pont-du-Gard aquaduct (be sure to see it from the top of the cliffs on each side of the structure, which requires ascending a lot of steps, but it will be worth it, particularly if the sun striked one side of the ruin more than the other), the Roman arena in Nîmes (which as far as I'm concerned is a full-fledged Roman colliseum, so massive is it -- even if much smaller than the one in Rome), and don't forget the Roman temple only a block or two away in Nîmes, which is well worth seeing because it's so well-preserved. (I had the impression that seeing the temple was "optional," though I could be wrong -- in any event, I certainly did not want to miss it, especially since it was such a short walk from the arena.) The visit to Uzes has nothing to do with Roman history, but it's a nice place to take a break between the Roman ruins in Pont-du-Gard and Nîmes, and since the Uzes visit falls around lunch time you can grab a bit to eat there. I highly recommend the ratatouille at Les Terroirs, if you want to experience this classic local fare (which was often surprisingly absent from menus elsewhere): it was perfect, and quite possibly the best dish I ate while in France.

Tour of Roman sites.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
Our driver /guide was a great source of information. We expected to see the Roman sites but she also pointed out many other places of interest en route. The car we travelled in was clean and comfortable. There were only 3 of us on the trip and we never felt rushed. We did have to pay an extra 5 euros to get into Pont du Gard. I would recommend the firm and the tour.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
My wife and I selected this tour because it covered Pont Du Garde. We weren't sure the weather would cooperate but it did. It was just the 2 of us with our wonderful guide. She knew everything and we had a wonderful time talking. The section to Uzes was unexpectedly great since that was the spring that the Pont du garde was built to use. Great pictures. So this trip showed the start of the water for the Pont Du Garde and the Pont Du Garde as well as the spring in Nimes that was also used by the Romans. Stunning terrain and awesome guide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We would highly recommend this day trip. Good value for money as well!

Guillaume was our guide and driver and was extremely knowledgeable about French history and kept us informed and amused throughout the trip. Good amount of times at the Pont du Gard, but could have done with more time in Nimes to see more of the arena. Uzes was also interesting and gave us taste of the area.

Gordana was an extremely knowledgeable, articulate and accommodating guide. The tour was well paced and we were able to see many highlights of the region without feeling rushed or that we were skipping anything. This tour is highly recommended, especially if you have a limited amount of time to spend in Provence.

Gordano was an excellent and friendly guide who provided lots of great information. She gave us time for pictures, and made special stops to allow us to do so. Six of us in her comfortable van, water bottles provided which was a nice touch. Definitely recommend this tour with Gordano (sp?).

Gordana (sp??) was lovely! Very upbeat, cheerful with incredible knowledge of the area. She was very professional and did a great job of balancing the group. I would highly recommend this tour as it is a bit off the beaten path but some amazing sites that are not overcrowded during the high season.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
We are extremely satisfied with the 5 hour tour out of Avignon as it far exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide, Ann, was extremely knowledgeable about the region and very experienced as a guide. Ann whet out of her way to make sure that we had the best vantage point for pictures unlike many of the other tours at the same attractions. One of the best tour companies and guides we have ever used.

How to Get There

Uzès is a 45-minute drive from Avignon via the N100 road and a 30-minute drive from Nimes. Buses and trains run from both cities—the 152 runs through from both towns—while a more popular option is to take a tour that stops at Pont du Gard along the way.

When to Get There

Uzès is at its most atmospheric on the market days of Wednesday and Saturday, but expect big crowds especially in July and August. Like most French towns, Sundays can be quiet with many shops and attractions closed; in low season, shops and restaurants also tend to be closed on Mondays.

Uzès Market

Uzès market is renowned throughout Languedoc as a great place to pick up regional produce and sample local specialties. Stalls are heaped with freshly baked bread and pastries, meat and fish, seasonal fruits and vegetables, cheeses, and handicrafts. Top buys include truffles, olives and olive oils, thyme-flavored honey, and goat’s cheese. Stick around for lunch at one of the street food stalls or terrace cafés around the square.
